The "Centro Educativo Pavarotti" was built from the proceeds of a concert by the late singer Luciano Pavarotti. Almost all the students belong to the Mayan culture.
The centre is run by the foundation of Guatemalan Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu. The emphasis in the school is in promoting indigenous culture, and in promoting gender equality.
