The IMED is the oldest junior high in San Lucas. Many people think of it as the best school in the town. On registration day parents line up at 3:00 am in hopes of securing a spot for their child.
It is noted for good discipline, and being well organized. The school has a good academic record, and many of it's sports teams are champions of the Sololá area.
- About 500 students attend the school
- There are nine classrooms, 7th to 9th grade
- The school has a computer lab, library and basketball court
- Classes start at 6:40 or 7:15 am, through to 12:30 pm
