In June every year, San Lucas Toliman is host to a number of schools, which participate in a Marimba Festival The marimba is Guatemala's national instrument. It is somewhat like a wooden xylophone. Each marimba is played by three or four players, and generally two marimbas are played at the same time. Good teamwork is necessary to play the marimba. It used to be that only boys played the marimba, but in the last five years many girls groups have sprung up, and there are one or two mixed groups |
