Population is about 14,000 in town and 14,000 in the villages.
51% are women. 57% are less than 20 years old, but only 3% are over 60 years old.
89% are Kaqchikel Mayans. Almost all people in the villages speak Kaqchikel, but most of the young people in town speak only Spanish. (Until the peace accords, children who didn't speak Spanish had to learn Spanish before they could enter first grade. Where there were schools, parents taught their children only Spanish)
Population growth is about 2.7% per year. Parents who've been to school have fewer children and healthier families.
